06 · Competitor deep dive

Who is earning attention, how, and where Plantd fits

We reviewed the public ads of 31 brands and captured 15 competitor product pages on a phone. Public ad data shows how long an ad runs and how much a brand tests. It never shows sales or return on ad spend.

The landscape in one screen

  • Big premium body care runs brand flights, not pain ads. Sol de Janeiro's top 15 ads all launched five days ago for a perfume mist. Tatcha's 210 are all holiday gifting. No pain, no offer, no proof on the image. Not a template for an unknown brand.
  • The ads that last for unknown natural brands are almost all tallow. Bare Ritual (statics running 205–269 days), Sky&sol, Tayyib, Lasso, Primally Pure, Local Revival. The pitch: "natural moisturizer that actually works", a named villain, the price objection handled out loud, BOGO or 50% off.
  • Body butter at scale sells attraction. Penrose (~2,600 ads) and Ascend (~1,000) sell pheromone body butter for men as fragrance dupes. Salt & Stone sells body care on compliments.
  • Natural face care shows pain as "results" quotes ("My sun spots were gone in 3 weeks") and body aging ("Noticing Wrinkles & Fine Lines On Your Body?").
  • Canadian clean brands are nearly absent from US Meta. Glomalin runs 17 ads in Canada only. Om Organics, Province Apothecary, Consonant, Graydon and Pure Anada run none. Bushbalm is the exception: blunt body pain ("no more ingrown hairs"), creator video, and Ulta.
Scent brands run the most ads; tallow brands keep theirs running longest. Plantd has run none.Active US Meta ads per brand, and the longest-running ad among the top ads we checked. A one-day snapshot (6 Oct 2026): public ad data shows no growth trend and no sales.

  • Scent and attraction Body butter sold as scent and attraction runs by far the most ads: Penrose and Ascend sell "smell like a designer cologne".
  • Tallow, "natural that works" Mid-size volume, but the longest-running images (Bare Ritual 269 days, Local Revival 179): the "natural that actually works" message keeps paying.
  • Big premium brands Lots of ads, refreshed fast: Sol de Janeiro's and Tatcha's top ads were 5 days old (launch and gifting campaigns). Nécessaire is the exception, at 257 days.
  • Canadian Canadian clean brands barely advertise in the US. Bushbalm, at about 50 ads, got in with blunt body pain and creator video.
  • Plantd Zero ads, ever. Every lane above is open to test, and the plant-based answer to tallow is the one nobody holds.

More brands: Sol de Janeiro, Tatcha, Herbivore, Ursa Major, Cocokind, Naturium, Lasso, Penrose, Ascend, and who runs no ads
  • Sol de Janeiro (~74): 22 of top 25 static, all multi-version, launch flight for a perfume mist, FB and IG only. No pain, no offer.
  • Tatcha (~210): all holiday gifting, 4–5 days old.
  • Herbivore (~74): "RETINOL RESULTS. WITHOUT THE RETINOL."; "THE KERATOSIS PILARIS ON MY ARMS IS ALMOST COMPLETELY GONE"; "BRIGHTER SKIN BY THIS TIME NEXT WEEK". Free shipping over $100.
  • Ursa Major (~190): quote cards like "My sun spots were gone in 3 weeks." Free full-size face wash; 15% off plus free shipping.
  • Cocokind (~160): 138-day founder video on ingredient quality; "Searching for affordable skincare that actually works?" Money-back guarantee.
  • Naturium (~130): creator video, "How I get silk skin for under $20". 10% at signup.
  • Lasso (~220): 23 of 30 founder or creator video; "Don't use beef tallow as a moisturizer"; a permanent 50–70% off; "10,000+ happy customers".
  • Penrose and Ascend (~2,600 and ~1,000): pheromone body butter for men, sold as fragrance dupes ("Smell Like Creed Aventus without breaking the bank"); Buy 2 Get 1 Free. Body butter scales when the promise is social and scent.
  • No US brand-page ads: Tree Hut, Youth To The People and Drunk Elephant (their retailers and creators carry paid social), Om Organics, Province Apothecary, Consonant, Graydon, Pure Anada, and Plantd.
  • Where they run: the tallow and direct-to-consumer brands show all five placements (Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network, Messenger, Threads), which suggests automatic placements. Sol de Janeiro and Tatcha run Facebook and Instagram only.

Formats that last

  1. Objection-confession poster: black field, price admitted, jar huge (Bare Ritual, 78–269 days).
  2. Before/after of one body part: arms, shins, backs.
  3. Quote-led poster, often with the customer's age.
  4. Native text: confession boxes, phone notes, cart screenshots, diary handwriting.
  5. Symptom naming and grids: annotated skin, "If you're seeing…", tick lists.
  6. Offer posters, as support, never the whole pitch.
  7. Creator video for the volume brands.

Pain themes that print

Body: crepey or aging body skin in women 40+; dry, flaky, itchy skin after the shower; rough, bumpy arms; lotion that doesn't last; smelling cheap or wanting compliments; fear of "toxic" ingredients.

Face: looking tired or older than you feel; dark spots; fine lines without retinol irritation; sensitive skin; a face stripped by cleansers; "it's expensive, but…"

Offer norms

BOGO or buy-more (Bare Ritual BOGO at $59.99, Penrose Buy 2 Get 1, Sky&sol Buy 3); deep discounts (Lasso 50–70%, Kopari "Save $86"); bundles at a price point (Primally Pure $62 → $48); first order and guarantee (Bushbalm 20%, Ursa Major 15%, Bare Ritual 90-day guarantee). Price bands: tallow balms about $36–60 for 2 oz; premium body serums and washes $25–60. Plantd's $28.99 for 8 oz sits comfortably inside; the face line sits at the top of the indie band.

White space Plantd can own Inference, to test on Meta

  1. The plant-based answer to the tallow wave. Nobody says "rich, works like tallow, no animal fat". That speaks to vegetarians and to everyone put off by the smell or the idea.
  2. Winter-dry, itchy body skin, named bluntly. Only Local Revival (a body wash) and First Aid Beauty ("winter skin emergencies") come close. No body cream owns "itchy, flaky shins every winter" or "cracked knuckles from hand-washing".
  3. Fragrance-free for itchy, reactive skin, and five real-scent options in the same range. Competitors push scent (Sol, Salt & Stone, Penrose) or ingredients (tallow), rarely both.
  4. Natural face care for "looks tired" and "tight after washing". Natural face brands lead with spots and lines; the tired-face and stripped-after-washing moments are unowned.
  5. The proof gap. Every long-runner carries proof: review counts with ages, "470,000+ jars sold", press logos. Plantd's real counts and named reviews must be on every ad.

Product pages: how pain-led pages sell, and where Plantd's fall short

The method: two pain-led pages from other categories

A supplement brand runs one product with four landing views, one per ad pain. The ad hook is the headline: "Still foggy by 3 PM, even after the coffee?" A one-sentence mechanism follows, then the offer, a buy box with a subscription timeline and a guarantee "even if opened", customer videos, a comparison against the failed alternative, a timeline of the first 60 days with customer quotes, and reviews filtered to the page's pain. Only the pain lines change between views; the buy box and policies are shared.

A hair-serum brand (55+ view) puts the pain and offer in the announcement bar, an audience line under the title ("Made for women 55+ with thinning hair"), a third-party rating badge, a before/after strip under the button with name, age and the specific problem, a cause carousel, named stories with failed alternatives, an objection FAQ and the guarantee in plain words.

What converts on competitor pages

  • OSEA: the only body-butter page that names an ugly visible problem (crepiness) on the first screen, backed by a 32-woman study and a 30-day money-back line under the button.
  • Nécessaire: rating, price, subscription and Add to Cart all on the first phone screen, plus a third-party eczema seal on the product image.
  • First Aid Beauty: condition-first navigation and medical seals. Its eczema claim rides on a 0.5% colloidal oatmeal drug active, which Plantd cannot copy; the structure it can.
  • Bushbalm: the product is named after the pain, the navigation is a list of pains, subscribe defaults to the realistic cadence.
  • Tatcha: wins "without stripping" and answers the price objection in a "why not a dupe" block. Useful for the $54.99 face line.
  • Solura (scaling tallow): a customer's pain quote above the title, a comparison table, a bundle ladder with visible savings, the guarantee in the top bar.
  • Avoid: pop-ups at first paint, chat bubbles over the gallery, 10–16 MB pages, zero-review product pages.

Anatomy of a best-in-class pain-led skincare product page (17 parts)
  1. Top bar: pain, offer and risk reversal in one line.
  2. Gallery: product; the problem area improved; texture; a comparison card.
  3. Audience line above or under the headline ("For dry, crepey-looking legs and arms").
  4. Headline = the ad hook, in the customer's moment, not the product name.
  5. Stars and a pooled count right under the headline.
  6. One-sentence mechanism: why what she uses now fails, why this works.
  7. Buy box: scent and size, a tier ladder with per-jar economics, subscribe at a realistic cadence, one line on shipping and duties, the guarantee, Add to Cart on the first phone screen.
  8. Proof under the button: three reviews or before/afters from people with this pain.
  9. Cause cards: three to five things that make it worse, each ending with what the product does.
  10. Comparison table against the failed alternatives she owns.
  11. Timeline (night 1, day 7, day 30) using only measured or quoted outcomes.
  12. Ingredient story with origin and a reason each one is there for this pain.
  13. Reviews tagged by skin concern and age, filter chips that match the page.
  14. FAQ written from objections, in the buyer's words.
  15. Guarantee spelled out.
  16. Sticky bar synced to the selected option, never covered by marketing widgets.
  17. A light page: no pop-up before the first scroll, product structured data with the rating.
