04 · Who buys, and what hurts

The woman whose skin started reacting

Built from 324 verbatim quotes, each checked word for word against its source: Plantd's own reviews, Amazon reviews of 31 competing products, and 17,604 skin posts from 18 Reddit communities. The personas are hypotheses to test, and each claim shows how strong its evidence is.

The primary avatar

Most likely a woman in her late 30s to 60s Estimate. Her skin used to tolerate drugstore lotion. Then something changed: a winter that cracked her hands, a pregnancy, a baby with eczema, perimenopause, a move somewhere dry, chemo, or a lotion that reformulated. She has a bathroom shelf of half-used tubs.

  • Now: applies cream several times a day and it lasts an hour. Reads ingredient lists "like its my second job". Gets headaches or redness from scent. Hates lotion on her sheets and clothes.
  • Wants: one cream that is rich enough, sinks in, never stings, and that she never has to research again.
  • Already tried: CeraVe, Cetaphil, Aveeno, Vanicream, Vaseline, Aquaphor, La Roche-Posay, Honest, Bath & Body Works, coconut oil, tallow, "natural creams… over $40" that did nothing.
  • Believes: fragrance is usually the culprit; shorter ingredient lists are safer; "natural" is not automatically gentle.

I have very sensitive skin and often times finding a good moisturizing cream is hard.

My daughter gets rough, dry hands so easily and always complains about cremes stinging as they soak in - but NOT so with batch!

Two findings that change the copy. "Natural" and "organic" are reasons to trust, never the reason to buy: a loud share of skincare buyers now mock "clean beauty" and read "no unpronounceable ingredients" as fear-mongering. And beef tallow, the hottest "natural" trend, carries an equally loud backlash: breakouts, "smelled like meat", and a political signal for some. Lead with the pain and the specific ingredient list. Let "organic" sit underneath.

Six ideal customer profiles

ICP A

The reactive-skin seeker

Best product: Nude 8 oz

Awareness Solution-aware

An adult, most likely a woman, with dry, sensitive, eczema-prone or fragrance-reactive skin. Mild, not prescription-level.

Evidence. Rung 3: 7.3% of US adults have atopic dermatitis, 60% of them mild (Chiesa Fuxench, J Invest Dermatol 2019). Rung 2–3: Amazon eczema-cream reviews. Rung 4: r/eczema. Age and gender not measured for Plantd.

In their own words

Aveeno makes me itchy too bad . But Cera Ve burns and Aquaphor itches too. There is no good option for me , really.

Literally everything has some kind of fragrance and its irritating my skin really badly.

the vanicream thing is such a betrayal when it's supposed to be the safe one

I had to learn the hard way that many unscented products actually have fragrance in them to make them unscented.

Hooks for this person

  • Your 'unscented' lotion might still have fragrance in it.
  • The safe cream stung. The ointment got on everything.
  • 13 ingredients. No fragrance. No essential oils. For skin that reacts to everything.

Offer

2 oz Nude trial ($14.99) credited to the 8 oz, plus the 30-day guarantee said loudly. (PROPOSED)

Situation, failed alternatives, objections, triggers, where to find her
Situation
Lives by "fragrance free" labels, patch-tests everything, owns Vanicream, CeraVe and Aquaphor. Flares in winter, after hand washing, on hard water, or when a product reformulates.
What she already tried
CeraVe (burns for some), Vanicream ("really greasy"), Aquaphor and Vaseline (sticky), Aveeno (oat allergy for some), coconut oil, Lush Charity Pot ("greasy for HOURS"), "natural" brands that still caused a rash.
Objections
Fear of another reaction · oat allergy · jar hygiene vs a pump · price vs a 16–19 oz drugstore tub · natural is not hypoallergenic · too light for very dry skin.
Buying triggers
First cold snap, a flare, a product reformulating, a dermatologist saying "fragrance free", moving to a dry climate.
Where she is
r/eczema, r/SkincareAddiction, Facebook eczema parent groups, Amazon search ("fragrance free body cream"), the Target and Walgreens skin aisle, dermatology creators.
ICP B

The ingredient-anxious switcher

Best product: Nude 8 oz (+ Renewal Night Cream)

Awareness Problem-aware

Women switching to cleaner products, sharpest in pregnancy, breastfeeding and the first year with a baby who has dry or eczema-prone skin.

Evidence. Rung 2–3: Earth Mama, ATTITUDE and Honest reviews. Rung 4: r/BabyBumps, r/pregnant, r/NaturalBeauty, r/crunchy.

In their own words

I am itchy all over, not just on my bump. The air is so dry this winter and it feels like thousands of needles poking me everywhere. I put on lotion or body cream but it doesn’t really help.

Think of every product you use on yourself and baby

I tried natural creams as well that were over $40 and still did not work my son was up all night crying and itching I felt hopeless

I’ve download all the apps and googled my eyes out and still can’t seem to figure out just a good clean option for body lotion. There is wayyyyy too many options and opinions and I’m a deer in headlights.

Hooks for this person

  • Itchy bump, dry winter air, and a lotion label you can't read.
  • Reading every ingredient label in the aisle? Ours is 13 lines.
  • No fragrance, no retinoids, nothing you have to Google at 2 am.

Offer

"Mama + baby": Nude 8 oz + 2 oz bundle. (PROPOSED)

Guardrail. Sudden intense itching in late pregnancy, especially hands and feet, can be a medical problem. Sell Nude against dry, tight winter pregnancy skin, never as the answer to pregnancy itch.

Situation, failed alternatives, objections, triggers, where to find her
Situation
Reading labels mid-aisle. Itchy, stretched, dry belly skin in winter. Smell sensitivity. A baby with patches and a shelf of failed products.
What she already tried
Cocoa butter and stretch-mark oils, Honest ("strong, chemical smell"), Avalon ("ingredients aren't clean despite it being organic"), Dr. Bronner's ("super dry"), beef tallow (breakouts, "smelled like meat"), EOS ("has mineral oil").
Objections
"Is it actually safe in pregnancy?" (needs provider language, never our claim) · natural is not always effective · distrust of organic labels · essential oils (Nude has none) · fear-marketing backlash · jar spoilage.
Buying triggers
A positive test, second-trimester itch, the baby's first eczema patch, a viral "toxic ingredient" post.

ICP C

The 40+ woman whose skin changed

Best product: Renewal Night Cream + Restorative Facial Oil; Nude or Calm for body

Awareness Solution-aware to most-aware, skeptical

Women roughly 40–65, peri- or post-menopause, with a newly dry face, crepey arms and neck, and an itchy dry body.

Evidence. Rung 2–3: Amazon night-cream and crepey-lotion reviewers state ages in their 40s to 70s. Rung 4: r/Menopause, r/Perimenopause, r/30PlusSkinCare. Plantd's facial reviews are too early to say.

In their own words

I am 49 and have been dealing with stubborn perimenopausal dry skin for years. I have bought so many creams and serums - some of them hundreds of dollars. Nothing penetrated my face for lasting relief and the dryness just kept making me look older and older.

no matter what I do my skin feels dry and gross in the morning. I’ve tried lotions, Vaseline, it always feels nice going on but I wake up feeling dry.

I went from 46 and fabulous to decrepit 80 year old woman. It's WILD.

My skin pre peri was oily; now it’s dry and parched which neither the climate nor the autumn air is helping.

Hooks for this person

  • Waking up with a face that feels tight and looks more tired than you are?
  • Your night cream shouldn't end up on your pillowcase.
  • Perimenopause made your skin dry overnight. Your routine didn't change with it.

Offer

PM duo (night cream + oil) at a duo price, 30-day guarantee, a 2 oz body cream as the gift. (PROPOSED; no duo exists today)

Situation, failed alternatives, objections, triggers, where to find her
Situation
Applies cream several times a day and it lasts an hour. Sees her mother's face in the mirror. Itches at night.
What she already tried
"So many creams and serums, some of them hundreds of dollars"; Nécessaire body lotion ("Doesn't absorb"); cleansers that leave skin tight; Crepe Erase ("3 jars with absolutely no results"); an organic night balm that stays greasy on the pillowcase.
Objections
"Natural" read as unscientific · price at $55–60 per face item · scent near the nose (heightened smell in menopause) · choice overload · review trust, which matters because Plantd's face reviews are few and recent.
Buying triggers
Perimenopause onset, starting HRT, the first winter of "new" dry skin, a photo where her hands or neck aged her, chemo recovery.
Where she is
Facebook menopause groups, r/Menopause, Instagram and TikTok menopause doctors and 50+ creators, Amazon, Ulta, Sephora, Costco, Whole Foods.
ICP D

The wind-down ritual buyer

Best product: Calm 8 oz

Awareness Unaware to problem-aware

Busy women (work, kids, caregiving) who want a small, sensory end-of-day moment.

Evidence. Rung 2: Plantd reviews tie the creams to bedtime and relaxing; scent is praised in 75 of 134. Rung 2–3: Aveeno Stress Relief lavender has 35,575 ratings.

In their own words

Needed help with sleep and to relax so I can get to sleep.

is a much-needed break in my super busy day between work, kids

If I’m anxious I go on my phone and play merge games until I feel safe enough to try and go to sleep.

I put the calm cream on every night before bed and fall into a peaceful slumber almost right away.

Hooks for this person

  • You're in bed. Your brain is still at work.
  • The last five minutes of your day, before your phone gets them.
  • Dry hands, racing head, 10:47 pm.

Offer

Two-jar bundle (Calm for night + Nude for day) or a Calm 2 oz trial. (PROPOSED)

Guardrail. We may quote the review about falling asleep. We may never claim the cream helps sleep or anxiety.

Situation, failed alternatives, objections, triggers, where to find her
Situation
In bed with a racing head and dry hands. The phone is the default wind-down. Her "self-care" is five minutes, not a spa day.
What she already tried
Bath & Body Works-type scents ("fills the whole house"), drugstore lavender lotion that did nothing, greasy lotion on the sheets, heavy body butters, the phone.
Objections
Scent too weak or fades (Plantd's own 4-star complaint) · price for a body cream · grease on the sheets.
Buying triggers
A stressful season, a new job, burnout, the holidays, a friend's recommendation, seeing it at a spa or boutique.
Where she is
Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok "night routine", boutiques, HomeSense and TJ Maxx, gift shops.

The gifter

Best product: Discovery Set of Six

Awareness Aware of the need, unaware of Plantd; offer can lead

Partners, adult daughters and friends buying for a woman who is hard to buy for, picky about scent, or has sensitive skin. Also men buying for their wives.

Evidence. Rung 2: 10 gift mentions in 134 Plantd reviews; 16 reviews on the Discovery Set. Rung 4: r/GiftIdeas, an r/Perimenopause gift thread.

In their own words

I want to gift something from the boys but make it something she would use

she wanted a cream that was natural and is very picky about any scent. She is in her mid 80s

I gifted some skincare stuff last year and nothing has been opened yet lol.

I bought these as a gift, but ended up keeping them for myself

Hooks for this person

  • She has sensitive skin and you're scared of buying the wrong thing.
  • The gift for the woman who says she doesn't need anything.
  • Six scents. One is fragrance-free. Nobody gets left out.

Offer

Gift note and a ship-by date; the 8 oz trio as the upgrade. (PROPOSED)

Situation, failed alternatives, objections, triggers, where to find her
Situation
Holiday, birthday, Mother's Day, or a hard season (chemo, new baby, menopause). Afraid of buying the wrong scent or something that irritates.
What she already tried
Generic candle and lotion sets, gift baskets of candy and tea, DIY "natural skincare" hampers.
Objections
What if she reacts or hates the scent · "lotion is a boring gift" · shipping time · does it look giftable (reviews say the glass jars do).
Buying triggers
The calendar (Nov–Dec, Mother's Day, Valentine's), a partner going through something.

The hand-washer with cracked hands

Best product: Nude 8 oz (home) + 2 oz (bag)

Awareness Most-aware of the category, acute problem

Nurses, parents of small kids, cooks, hairstylists, cleaners: anyone washing 20+ times a day, worst in winter.

Evidence. Rung 2–3: O'Keeffe's Working Hands has 83,233 ratings and 964 "crack relief" mentions. Rung 4: r/eczema hands threads, r/30PlusSkinCare winter-hands thread.

In their own words

Cold weather and constant hand washing has absolutely wrecked my hands this season.

My hands have been chapped and peeling, probably because I am obsessed with washing my hands.

For me what aged you in the first pick was your hands. Just need some heavy duty lotion.

moisturising enough for my dry hands but doesn’t feel overly greasy for my sensory-issues.

Hooks for this person

  • Hands cracking by the 20th wash of your shift?
  • Hand cream that's gone before you touch your phone.
  • Greasy or useless. Pick neither.

Offer

The "home + work" pair: Nude 8 oz plus a 2 oz for the bag. (PROPOSED)

Situation, failed alternatives, objections, triggers, where to find her
Situation
Cream in every bag and room. Band-aids on split fingers and customers asking why. Sanitizer stings.
What she already tried
Waxy hand creams that "did not moisturise my hands at all", greasy ointments that get on everything she touches, creams she feels are "just masking it for a few hours".
Objections
An 8 oz jar is not portable (answer: 2 oz minis) · a $29 jar vs an $8 tube · jar hygiene at work.
Buying triggers
The first cold week, flu season, a new healthcare job, a newborn.
Where she is
Facebook nurse groups, r/nursing, TikTok nurse creators, Amazon, pharmacies.

Canada vs the US

In Canada, brutal winters and buy-Canadian pride are purchase reasons. In the US, "Made in Canada" is neutral to mildly positive. The dryness map differs too: dry western states and deserts, hard water, indoor heating. Price anchors are 16–19 oz drugstore tubs and $8–15 hand creams, so a $28.99 jar needs the sensitive-skin mechanism and the guarantee to justify itself. Pregnancy and menopause content is more medicalised in the US, so stay strictly cosmetic.

What to measure to replace the guesses

  1. A post-purchase survey on the thank-you page and first email: age band, who it is for (me, gift, child), what made you try it, skin type. 50–100 answers show the shape.
  2. Meta purchases by age and gender, with broad 18–65+ targeting. Read purchases, not clicks.
  3. Amazon Brand Analytics demographics once Brand Registry is live.
  4. Test ICPs A, C and D as the first three Meta concepts. The buyer mix follows the creative.
