09 · Channels and Amazon FBA

One parent listing, six scents underneath

We read 52 competing product pages and 17 search-result pages on amazon.com, measured their main images and A+ content, and priced the fees from Amazon's 2026 rate card. Plantd has no listing on amazon.com or amazon.ca today.

Update from Plantd (after this research): Plantd is already listed with Lotus Light, which has moved almost no units, and there is no budget for a US broker. Read every Lotus Light step on this page as an existing listing that needs demand, not a future distributor. The no-broker plan is in the report's Distributors chapter.

Before the channel chapters (09–11): what Plantd keeps per jar. The same $28.99 jar earns very different money depending on how it reaches the shopper. Direct and marketplace routes earn 1.5 to 2 times what distribution earns per unit, so distribution only pays when it buys reach Plantd cannot create itself. Do not cut the shelf price to fit distribution: at $3.62/oz the cream already sits in the premium indie band. If costs are high, add a larger value size later.

What Plantd keeps per 8 oz jar ($28.99 shelf price), by channel (ESTIMATE)
  • Direct and marketplace routes
  • Distributor routes

Estimates built on labelled assumptions; replace with each partner's real terms. Retailer margin 42% (Threshold) or 45% (Lotus Light, UNFI/KeHE), 50% on Faire. Distributor margin 30% Threshold, 32% Lotus Light, 27% UNFI/KeHE. Trade and deductions 11%, 8% and 22.5% of the distributor price. Freight $0.60 to a distributor warehouse, $1.00 to a store or into Amazon. Amazon: 15% referral ($4.35), FBA $4.76 (non-peak, 12–16 oz, incl. 3.5% surcharge), about $0.35 placement and storage. DTC: $6.50 shipping and 3.2% payment fees. First-quarter distributor launch costs (intro allowances, free fill, guaranteed sale) come on top and can cut the first two quarters by 15–25 points.

The cost line. At a landed cost of about $4.50 a jar or less, the 8 oz cream keeps 50%+ gross margin even through a distributor. At $6 it is thin (29–39% before marketing and brokers). At $8 it fails through UNFI or KeHE. A small brand's 8 oz cream with a glass jar, label and essential oils commonly lands at $3–6 Estimate. The face line has plenty of room: $16.70–19.50 net through distributors, $41.20 on Amazon. Its limit is what a health-food shopper will pay.

Amazon

What the category looks like

  • "Hand and body cream" page one is mass: CeraVe (148,700 reviews, $0.66/oz), Nivea, Eucerin, Aveeno, Cetaphil, Jergens, mostly under $1 an ounce. Plantd cannot win that page on price and should not try.
  • "Body butter" page one mixes mass and indie: eos, Tree Hut, Naturium, Saltair, and Hearth & Homestead whipped tallow at #1 in Body Butters (14,006 reviews, $25.16 for 1.3 oz, $19.35/oz).
  • The searches that fit Plantd appear in Amazon's own autocomplete: "fragrance free body cream sensitive skin", "non greasy body lotion fast absorbing", "body cream for dry skin", "lavender body cream for sleep", "natural body cream no chemicals", "hand cream for dry cracked hands".
  • Premium natural body creams sell at $20–45 for 6–10 oz: Kiehl's Creme de Corps 8 oz $36.75, OSEA $43, OUAI $40, CYKLAR $29, Kopari $23.80, Weleda Skin Food $14.12.
  • Listing norms: 49 of 52 main images are pure white; about 20 add an open lid or swatch. 47 of 52 offer Subscribe & Save. 39 carry a video. Titles are capped at 75 characters from 27 July 2026.
Price per ounce on each brand's own site (US$, 6 Oct 2026)

Plantd's 8 oz is cheaper per ounce than every premium natural competitor we captured except Nécessaire's big bottle. The site never says so.

2026 rate card: referral 15% above $10; every jar is Large Standard (thicker than 0.75 in). The 8 oz jar ships at 410 g, so FBA is $4.76 non-peak ($5.06 from 15 Oct to 14 Jan; $5.22 if the packed jar tops 1 lb). Freight and customs broker into US FBA estimated at $1.00 per 8 oz jar. The Discovery Set is modelled at $74.95 with an estimated $6.73 FBA fee for a 2 lb kit. Weigh packed units to confirm.

On the 8 oz jar at $28.99, Plantd keeps $18.53 before ads: 15% referral ($4.35), FBA $4.76 ($5.06 in peak season) and about $1.35 for freight into US FBA, placement and storage Estimate. That is about 1.9 times the Threshold route.

Contribution after product cost is $14.53, $12.53 or $10.53 at a landed cost of $4, $6 or $8, so advertising can take up to 50%, 43% or 36% of sales before a jar loses money.

The 2 oz single nets only $7.98: sell it inside the Discovery Set (about $54.43 net), not alone. The 3 × 8 oz bundle nets about $57.15.

The face line nets $41.20 a jar, but at about $27.50/oz it sits 2 to 5 times above the Amazon prestige band (JUNO's cleansing balm is #1 at $5/oz). Hold it until Meta and the site create branded demand and each face SKU has 50+ reviews. The facial oil is the best first face test: it sits nearest Herbivore and Elemis.

Other costs: inbound placement $0.20–0.60 per unit unless shipments are split as Amazon suggests; storage $0.78 per cubic foot (January–September) and $2.40 (October–December); low-inventory fee waived for new sellers' first 365 days; returns processing applies above a 5.5% return rate. There is no program that fulfils US orders from Canadian inventory: stock must sit in a US Amazon warehouse.

Listing copy for launch

The mockup below was drafted first. The launch copy tightens three things: no "organic" anywhere in the title, bullets, highlights or images (the creams are well under 70% organic, so US rules allow it only in the ingredient list); the net quantity changes to weight once a filled jar is weighed ("8 oz (227 g)" style); and the guarantee stays off the detail page. The mockup's bullet 3 says "certified organic oat and agave" and would change.

Bullets (198–235 characters, pain first)

  1. FOR SKIN THAT FEELS TIGHT AGAIN BY NOON: A rich daily hand and body cream with avocado oil, cocoa butter and glycerin that sinks in fast and keeps dry skin feeling soft for hours, so you stop reapplying a thin lotion three times a day.
  2. NO GREASY FILM ON YOUR SHEETS OR YOUR PHONE: Lightweight and easy to spread. It absorbs quickly without the slick layer heavy butters leave behind, so you can moisturize and get dressed right away, morning or night.
  3. SCENTED WITH ESSENTIAL OILS, NOT SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCE: Six scents, from fresh Spa eucalyptus to warm Vacay coconut vanilla, plus Nude, fragrance free. Made without parabens, phthalates, sulfates, mineral oil or palm oil. (Confirm Vacay's vanillin is natural first.)
  4. FOR ROUGH HANDS, ELBOWS, KNEES AND HEELS: Oat kernel extract and agave leaf extract join cocoa butter and avocado oil to soften rough, dry-looking patches and leave skin smooth and comfortable to the touch.
  5. PLANT BASED, MADE IN CANADA: A cruelty-free, plant-based cream in an 8 oz jar for hands and body. Smooth a generous amount onto skin morning and evening and massage in slow circles until it melts in.
Gallery and A+ plan for launch (what changes from the mockup)

Gallery, seven slots plus video: 1 pure-white packshot (85%+ fill, measured at 255; an open-lid variant with a small swatch is allowed); 2 pain hero, "Tight and dry again by noon?"; 3 texture, "Sinks in. No greasy film."; 4 ingredient callouts (avocado oil, cocoa butter, oat, agave), no organic claim; 5 a scent wheel with this child's scent highlighted; 6 a "Made without" panel plus Made in Canada and cruelty-free; 7 how to use on hands, elbows, knees and heels. Video: 15–20 seconds of scoop, rub-in, no shine (39 of 52 competitors carry one). The mockup covers slots 1–5.

A+ (Premium once Brand Registry allows; Basic until then): 1 Full Image pain banner (with separate phone art); 2 Navigation Carousel, one panel per scent; 3 Full Image texture and absorption; 4 Hotspot on the four hero ingredients; 5 Comparison Table across the six scents, the Discovery Set and the 3-pack; 6 FAQ (greasy? sensitive skin? how long does a jar last? where does the scent come from?). Add a Brand Story carousel: 45 of 52 competitors run one. The mockup leads with the pain banner, a three-pain carousel, the size comparison and the FAQ; the launch version adds the per-scent carousel, the texture banner and the hotspot.

Launch sequence (estimates): 150–250 units per scent plus 200 Discovery Sets and 100 bundles, about 60–90 days of cover; Vine with 30 units on the parent; a 20% launch coupon for 4–6 weeks with the list price held at $28.99; Sponsored Products at about $1,500–3,000 a month for months 1–3 (exact match on each scent phrase, "body cream for dry skin" as discovery, product targeting on CYKLAR, Kopari, Saltair, Naturium and Weleda; cut terms above 45% ad cost of sales after 20+ clicks); Sponsored Brands video after Brand Registry; send part of the Meta budget to the listing through the Brand Referral Bonus.

Timing: peak fees and $2.40/cu ft storage run 15 October to 14 January. A Q4 2026 gift launch only works if Brand Registry and US labels are done within weeks; otherwise launch in Q1 2027 on winter dry skin.

Launch mechanics

  • Must
Brand Registry. A pending or registered trademark from any country with an Amazon store qualifies, so a Canadian filing works. Needed for A+ Premium, Vine and Brand Analytics.
  • Must
Fix the Spa 2 oz barcode, then match the brand. 11 of Plantd's 12 UPCs pass the check digit; the Spa 2 oz code in Shopify (628942537016) fails. Check it against the printed label and correct it. As 12-digit codes the prefix reads 062, likely issued by GS1 Canada. Amazon checks the GS1 record against the brand name exactly; confirm the licensee name.
  • Must
Claims. No "heals", "eczema treatment" or "repairs". Amazon treats "heals cracked skin" as a drug claim.
  • Do
Vine for the first reviews: up to 30 units per parent, $200 credit for new Brand Registry sellers. Site reviews cannot be carried over.
  • Do
Subscribe & Save at 5–10% on the 8 oz children, aimed at the moment a customer runs out mid-winter (a jar lasts about 6–8 weeks Estimate).
  • Do
Seller account and inventory. One North America unified account (Professional, $39.99 a month) under the entity that owns the trademark and the barcodes. Stock must be imported into US FBA; once there, Remote Fulfillment can also serve amazon.ca. Set a minimum advertised price policy before wholesale opens.
  • Check
Hazmat review. Limonene and linalool on the label can trigger a dangerous-goods review; keep a safety data sheet ready (an emulsion is unlikely to be classed hazardous).
  • Check
Packaging: glass ships as Large Standard; confirm drop-test packaging and the packed weight before the first shipment.
