RAW — what didn’t make it

Every plate killed while building the thirteen Steve-device rebuilds, with the reason it died. 23 superseded generations across 11 of the 13 concepts. GR09 and GR10 were right first time.

This is kept deliberately. A rejected plate that records why is worth more than a clean folder — half of these failures are the same three mistakes repeating, and they are now rules: the photograph must carry the contrast (no scrims), the product must survive a centre 4:5 Feed crop, and moving a product in a re-brief also changes its size.

Product buried. Brief said lower-right third; the model centred the bottle and made it large, so there was no continuous empty field. Any Notes sheet opaque enough to carry black body copy erased the product.

Still too little room. Better placement, but the product began at y980 — the sheet had to stop short and the layout stayed cramped.

Cut by the Feed crop. Bottle base fell below y1635, so a centre 4:5 crop clipped it. Found only once the product-crop gate existed.

Fake-news headline

Needed a gradient to work. Shot in daylight; the lower third was a light grey sweatshirt. White type only held with a scrim — and scrims were banned.

Post-it on skin

Wrong subject, unusable note. Shot on a woman, which the operator questioned for a men's product; the note was small and steeply angled so the handwriting overhung the paper. He called it: “the 78% off isn't even on the sticky note.”

Serif editorial flat-lay

Too evenly lit. Slate read 30–66 luminance everywhere. Large white serif only worked with scrims top and bottom, and the headline collided with the watch.

No room above the bottle. Real falloff achieved, but the wallet and watch still filled the upper third, so the tagline could not sit above the bottle as asked.

Price-objection essay

Offer landed on the product. Bottle lower-right; the white offer bar and the proof line sat across it.

Buried the copy and the bottle. A placement note also changed the scale — the bottle came back large and centre-frame, swallowing the body copy. Operator: “a huge problem… you're covering the bottle entirely.”

Apology letter

Cut by the Feed crop. Bottle sat at the bottom edge; a centre 4:5 crop took its base.

Bigger, not just lower. Asked to move down, the model enlarged and raised the bottle instead, and the letter copy landed on the cap.

Red-velvet offer still

Cut by the Feed crop. The bottle ran past y1635 and was clipped in Feed.

Water offer still

Sold a bundle it didn't show. Two bottles, no roll-on, and mid-blue water too bright to hold type without a gradient.

Still only two bottles. Near-black lower half fixed the contrast, but the ad still promised “+ free roll-on” over a picture without one.

Cut by the Feed crop. Three sprays and the roll-on finally in frame, but the cluster sat above y285 and lost its tops in a centre crop. This is the one the operator spotted.

Skeptic — bed

Wrong emotion. A man alone on the edge of the bed. Operator: “it looks like somebody is depressed.” The staging was briefed; the feeling was not.

Nowhere to put type. Couple together and happy, but a bright window filled the top third — no dark field, and scrims were banned.

Type sized to the gap. The plate left only a 650×750 dark hole, so the bubbles were built to fit it and the message text came out at 31px. Operator: “too small… not going to stop anybody scrolling by.”
