Instagram hook playbook

69 accounts · 1,617 posts · 724 covers and 358 spoken openers coded by hand. October 2026.

  1. The hook is the first frame. Caption first lines look the same for winners and losers across 1,617 posts.
  2. One concrete, readable claim on frame 0. No readable premise: 5 TOP / 20 BOTTOM.
  3. Stakes in the first person. Confession 10 / 0. "You"-pain openers: median 1.0.
  4. Anything that looks like an ad loses: 9 / 22.
  5. Same template, new subject. 21 pairs flipped on subject alone, and 11 of 12 reruns decayed.

Rules that held everywhere

TOP / BOTTOM counts. About 74% of every sample is TOP by design, so only a clear gap counts.

1. Readable premise on frame 0
5 TOP / 20 BOTTOM with no readable premise

Blank cover, one word, mid-sentence, small letterbox title or premise only in the caption loses. Same creator (drewbinsky) with the premise on frame: 5/0, 147x and 98x views. A wordless cover only works when the picture is the story.

2. Name a concrete thing
30 / 4 concrete vs 10 / 14 abstract (spoken)

Tool, brand, place, person, price or count in the first line. Abstract wisdom openers: median 0.72.

3. Pain in the first person
Confession 10 / 0 · "I"-story 24 / 9 · "you"-pain 7 / 4 (median 1.0)

Say it as "I" or "my client", or quote the viewer's own question. "What if I post at the wrong time?" 2.39 vs "POSTING TIME IS A LIE" 0.54.

4. Never look like an ad
9 TOP / 22 BOTTOM

Sponsor logos, gear reveals, enrollment, discounts, product-only POV, reposts. A sponsor post survived only when the news led and the logo did not.

5. The subject decides, the template doesn't
21 within-account pairs flipped

Chanel poster TOP, toothpaste in the same frame 0.41. "with Claude" 27.8 vs "with AI" 0.15. Hormozi red box with an asker 6.7, without 0.32.

6. Reruns decay
11 of 12 repeats lost 50 to 95%

MEC 13.85 to 2.61 · tinna 44.87 to 4.68 · nxxt 8.96 to 1.1. Keep the frame, change the subject.

7. A concrete place to stand, no polls
Versus / tier / takeover 16 / 2 · polls and quizzes 0 / 5

"10 Likes VS 1000 Likes" wins. "Are you Team AI or Team Human?" loses.

8. Gates buy comments, not reach
62 gated posts: comments 0.42 of likes vs 0.061

Use the comment keyword to collect DMs. Judge the hook on views and likes. A gate never rescued a blank cover.

9. Timing isn't the edge
94% TOP / 96% BOTTOM talk by 0.5 s

Same 12-word first sentence, same 3.5 words a second. Saying the cover line by 2 s: 53% vs 46%. Do it, but the words win.

10. Caption first line barely matters
Outliers vs below-median: question 8% vs 6%, number 20% vs 22%

Across 1,617 posts the caption looks the same for winners and losers. Spend the effort on the frame.

Where the analysts disagreed

Wordless covers
Keep a personal feed warm near 1x to 3x. They break out only when the photo is the story. aipapito's 1,245x is a 47-engagement base artifact.
Comment gates
They lift x_eng, which is why gated posts land in TOP. On views they are neutral. Use them as a lead device.
Say the cover line first
A free default (53% vs 46%), not the cause. It matters most in personal (78% vs 20%) and Meta (52% vs 38%).
Mid-sentence
A mid-thought voice is fine under a clear cover. A mid-sentence cover loses.
Proof screenshots
Meta's 7/0 is pinned, old or on tiny accounts. Receipts alone sit at median (1.08). Use them as support for a headline.
Lists
Win with a hidden payoff (colon, blanks, redaction) and a big count. Lose when the list is printed on the cover.
Tool news
Wins when first, on a face reel, framed as what changes for the viewer. Version numbers and rivalry lose.
Pain-first vs weak "you"-pain
Keep the pain and change the voice: "I", "my client", or the viewer's quoted question.
