r3 supersedes r1 and r2. A 57-ad video census landed after r1 published (r2 stacked its evidence sheets in the wrong section; r3 is the readable one) and it changed the ranking: the longest-running hooks in this category are not the ones r1 put first, and it surfaced three hooks r1 did not have (T11 GLP-1, T12 resignation interrupt, T13 purity). r1 stays up unchanged for comparison.
The batana top tier is a product-aware market being harvested with offers. None of it reaches someone who has not yet decided she wants batana oil. This is the awareness layer underneath it: ten hooks that start from the symptom, name no product in the headline, and carry no price.
Why the warehouse ads are useless to us
Read them on the Schwartz ladder and they are all Product Aware / Most Aware creative. “Batana oil, 50% off, ends tonight” only works on someone already shopping for batana oil — it harvests demand, it does not create any. Those brands have a pool to harvest. Wonder does not, which is exactly why the live CBO is underwater at ~$312 spent for 2 purchases.
So the whole set is the wrong rung. What we need sits one or two rungs down: Problem Aware (she knows her hair is shedding; she has never heard of batana) and partly Unaware (she thinks it is stress, or age, or normal).
Rung
What she already believes
What the ad may do
What kills it
Unaware
“This is just what happens.”
Name the moment. Relocate the cause.
Any product name in the hook
Problem aware ← our target
“My hair is thinning and I hate it.”
Dramatise the symptom, then offer a mechanism as news
Price, BOGO, urgency, category jargon
Solution aware
“Oils might help.”
Compare, prove, differentiate on one ingredient
Re-explaining the problem
Product / most aware
“I want batana oil.”
Offer, guarantee, urgency
Education — she is past it
Angle direction for the ten below: education and agitation. Not offer, not comparison.
The ad you picked, and exactly what it does
159979889, Catalina Lazaro, 86 days live. Three stills tell the whole story: at 0s a real man with a visibly thinning crown stares down the lens, finger raised, oil already streaming onto his scalp from a bottle held above frame. At 1s the caption lands — “JURO EN NOMBRE DE DIOS” (I swear in God's name). At 3s, in the same unbroken shot — same face, same vest, same pose — the hair has filled in to a full curly head, captioned “CREZCA” (grow).
What makes it work: no packshot, no price, no model. A scalp, in a bathroom, on a phone. The product is a tool being used, not an object being sold. And the transformation happens inside one continuous frame, which is far more arresting than two panels side by side.
Do not copy the morph. That 3-second regrowth is a fabricated result claim with a burned-in “results may vary” strip doing the legal work. It is also the exact thing you rejected on the PDP imagery in R3 — same-shirt, same-room staging, “because it could imply an instant transformation”. What is ours to take is the register: the scalp, the daylight, the phone, the oil actually going on, and the absence of any price. There is a real filmable change in that shot too — hair visibly darkening and separating as oil lands — and it needs no claim at all.
159979889 — 0s / 1s / 3s
The category's real hook ranking — 57 video ads + the statics
r1 ranked on the statics alone. The video census is the bigger and better evidence base (video is ~67% of this category), and it reorders things. Ranked on days live plus whether unrelated brands arrived at it independently. The ceiling on all of it: GetHookd's score is run-time and duplication, not ROAS.

Structure
Evidence — verbatim
Read
1
Accusation — “stop doing this”
Lumin 101d: “Stop doing this if you have CCCA.” + 4 more as a secondary device
The longest-running hair video in the set, and it is condition-specific. It does not sell, it warns.
2
Scalp reveal + instant sensation
Avery Collins 98d: “This feels so cooling.” · Catalina 86d · 5 primary, 13 secondary — the most common device in the whole census
Note what the 98-day hook actually is: a sensation, not a pain and not a benefit. Cheapest possible hook to shoot.
3
Hidden-mechanism reframe / negation
Lumin 59d: “Sis, your hair is being chewed away by a silent monster under your scalp right now.” · 7 secondary · plus the statics: Nodspark 72d, GLOV 52d/perf86, Root & Bloom
Still the most portable structure, and the only one that moves someone from Unaware in one line.
4
Authority — doctor, trichologist, diagnostic scan
ResetSpot 78d · Sarah Mitchell Trichologist 61d · Mandy Hair Loss Researcher 57d: “This scan explains why most women never restore their hair, no matter what they try.” · 4 primary, 8 secondary
A whole credentialed layer we have no access to and should not fake.
5
Resignation interrupt
Black Hair Growth Remedy 62d: “Before you give up on your hair and settle for wigs and scarves, watch this.”
Catches her at the moment she stops trying. No offer ad can reach that moment. Now T12.
6
Swear an oath
Catalina 86d, 6 ads — the one you picked
Its full spoken line is “I swear in God's name that the Batana shampoo will make new hair grow in just two weeks.” Unusable as written.
7
Trigger event — GLP-1
5 ads. Prime Hair Care 41d: “If you're on Ozempic or WegaV and your hair is falling out, you need to hear this.”
The newest live cause in the category and nobody in batana touches it. Now T11.
8
Identity-shame confession, sung
Black Hair Growth Remedy 60d and 55d — two original songs: “two years of loss, two years of pain … now I'm ducking every mirror I pass” and “I walked into Sunday service without my hat on, for the first time in twenty years”
The most emotionally advanced work in the category by a distance, and it is a dropship-adjacent advertiser doing it.
9
Celebrity authority-borrow
The Hair Growth Journal 59d and 50d: “Did McConaughey get a Hair Transplant??”
Cheap curiosity. Legally awkward for us; noted, not recommended.
10
Casting call
Root & Bloom 45d static, handwritten note
Still the only device that asks for participation rather than money. Now T10.
Two things that should change how we position, not just how we hook.
• A credentialed voice is actively marking our category down. Sarah Mitchell, trichologist, 61 days live, format “Rating hair loss treatments 1-10” — and at 3s the card reads “4/10 · rosemary oil”. Botanical oils are being publicly scored as mediocre by the authority layer. Generic “botanical oil” claims walk straight into that.
• Purity is an existing, proven hook shape. Vexivo, 59 days: “Hexane extraction ruins castor oil.” Wonder is cold-pressed and single-ingredient, and Kurinuka's 99-day winner is the only batana ad that shows the real paste — and also the one that answers the price objection. That triangle is a position, not just a hook. Now T13.
Caveats on the census
Dedupe before trusting counts. Several ad ids are one creative byte-for-byte — the Catalina man-scalp film alone runs as four ids, and it was relaunched on 2026-09-15 as three fresh ids.
The ad you liked is not from a hair brand. Catalina Lazaro is a rotating dropship page on plazabienstar.shop, Guatemala, cash-on-delivery — the same page also advertises a resistance band. Read its 86 days as proof the creative device travels, not as proof a hair brand was built on it.
Coverage is incomplete. 9 of the 57 on-topic ads have neither hook frames nor a transcript, and server-side keyframe extraction failed outright for three of the higher scorers. Several “30-day” rows came back with fewer than 30 days_active, so day counts here are each row's own figure rather than the filter.
Hook frames — every ad with stored stills (40)
0s / 1s / 3s per ad, labelled with ad id, brand and days live. These are the first three seconds of each competitor video — the hook, as the viewer actually meets it.

The thirteen — rules they all obey
No product name in the headline. No price, no discount, no urgency. No timeframe and no regrowth promise — the only bridge used is the live PDP line: batana oil may help with shedding, and conditions dry, fragile lengths. Every one leads with a pain or a trigger, and each enters from a different door so the set is not thirteen paraphrases. T13 is the one that sits a rung higher, at Solution Aware, because it exists to defend a premium price.
Twelve of the thirteen need new plates, and they are a different kind of plate from v38: bathrooms, drains, shelves, hair ties, kitchen tables. Phone register, not editorial. That is the real cost of this direction and you should know it before we start.
T1 · The drain
IS THAT A NORMAL AMOUNT?
Most women never ask anyone. Batana oil may help with shedding.
Pain: The handful of hair on the shower floor every wash, and not knowing whether it is normal.
Awareness: Problem aware (edge of unaware)
Shoot: Overhead phone shot of a wet shower floor with a dark coil of shed hair on the tiles. Her hand in frame. Bottle small on the shower ledge, not a hero.
Device: Symptom evidence + the question she has never asked out loud
Evidence: Root & Bloom's verbatim customer fear ('I can see my scalp now. It's terrifying'); GLOV's 'the brush fills up faster'
Plate: NEW
T2 · The part photo
YOU'VE TAKEN THIS PHOTO BEFORE.
Same light, same part, different month. Batana oil may help with shedding.
Pain: Photographing her own parting from above to check whether it is wider than it was last month.
Awareness: Problem aware
Shoot: An overhead phone-camera view of a parting, framed as if she shot it herself - slightly off-centre, phone edge or forearm visible, bathroom light.
Device: Recognition of a private behaviour - the strongest form of being seen
Evidence: Root & Bloom 'ready to stop hiding their part' (45d); our own W07 parting plate; Rumi Cosmetiques 37d states the same recognition out loud - 'Do you ever look in the mirror and feel like you can see more scalp than you can see hair?'
Plate: Adapt W07d, reshot as self-shot POV rather than a clinical two-panel
T3 · Two wraps
IT'S NOT GROWING SLOW.
It's breaking off as fast as it grows. Conditions dry, fragile lengths.
Pain: Hair that has sat at the same length for years, so she assumes it simply grows slowly.
Awareness: Problem aware
Shoot: Tight crop on a hand winding a tie round a thin ponytail, the extra loops visible; or her holding the ends up to camera against the light.
Device: Negation reframe applied to the length plateau - relocates the cause from growth to breakage
Evidence: Root & Bloom 39d, verbatim: 'If your hair has been stuck at the same length for years, it is not growing slow.' Their line beats the ponytail-metric version, so this now uses their reframe.
Plate: NEW
T4 · The crown in daylight
CHECK YOUR CROWN IN DAYLIGHT.
Then put something on it. 100% batana oil, straight to the scalp.
Pain: Catching sight of scalp through the crown in hard daylight or a car mirror.
Awareness: Problem aware
Shoot: A real person, head tipped forward into hard daylight, crown square to camera, the dropper pressed to the parting with oil visibly running in. Phone register, not studio.
Device: Scalp reveal + demonstration - THE register the operator picked out
Evidence: Catalina Lazaro video, 86 days live - real thinning crown, oil going on, no price anywhere
Plate: NEW - shoot this one first. Worth a male cut as well as a female one.
T5 · It's not your shampoo
IT'S NOT YOUR SHAMPOO.
It's what never reaches the root. 100% cold-pressed batana oil, massaged into the scalp.
Pain: Years of blaming products and buying another bottle, while nothing changes.
Awareness: Unaware to problem aware (the reframe does the work)
Shoot: A bathroom shelf crowded with half-used bottles, shot flat and unglamorous, one small amber bottle set apart from the crowd.
Device: Negation reframe - the highest-leverage TOF structure in the data
Evidence: Nodspark 'You're Not Tired. Your Lashes Are Thinning.' (72d); GLOV 'a hormone problem, not a product problem'; Root & Bloom 'isn't aging, it's DHT'
Plate: NEW
'What never reaches the root' is about where you apply it, not a physiological claim. Keep it that way.
T6 · Month four
NOBODY TELLS YOU ABOUT MONTH FOUR.
The shedding after a baby is real. Batana oil may help with shedding.
Pain: Postpartum shedding arriving around month four with no warning from anyone.
Awareness: Unaware to problem aware
Shoot: Night, a nursery or bathroom, muslin or monitor in shot, a brush with hair in it on the counter. Low warm light.
Device: Life-stage shock, pinned to a specific number so it reads as knowledge rather than sympathy
Evidence: Hair Syrup 'The postpartum chapter no one talks about... the hair shedding' (32d)
Plate: NEW
T7 · Try biotin
"TRY BIOTIN," THEY SAID.
Three years. Seven appointments. Batana oil may help with shedding.
Pain: Being dismissed - told it is stress, told to try biotin, sent home.
Awareness: Problem aware, high agitation
Shoot: Unglamorous close-up: a biotin tub among receipts and a pharmacy bag on a kitchen table, the amber bottle at the edge of frame.
Device: Failed-authority indictment
Evidence: Healthy Hair Revelations runs this exact story as a long-form advertorial; Active Aesthetics works the authority angle from the opposite side
Plate: NEW
Keep it about being dismissed. Do not disparage medicine as a category and do not imply we treat a diagnosed condition.
T8 · The style you stopped wearing
WHEN DID YOU STOP WEARING IT UP?
Batana oil may help with shedding, and conditions dry, fragile lengths.
Pain: Quietly retiring the styles that show scalp - the slick-back, the tight pony, the middle part.
Awareness: Problem aware
Shoot: Her hand holding a claw clip she no longer uses; or the back of her head with hair down while the clip sits unused on the shelf behind.
Device: Identity loss - a behaviour change she has already noticed in herself
Evidence: Root & Bloom's 'stop hiding their part' is the same emotional ground, stated as a style decision instead
Plate: NEW
T9 · Every braid has a price
YOUR EDGES PAID FOR EVERY BRAID.
Work it into the hairline, not the length. Batana oil may help with shedding.
Pain: Thinned edges and temples after years of tension styling.
Awareness: Problem aware
Shoot: A close, respectful crop of a hairline and temple with sparse edges, her hand tipping oil onto a fingertip.
Device: Cause and cost - and an audience nobody in the batana top tier addresses directly
Evidence: Rennora's entire positioning ('the ONLY hair growth serum made for black women'; 'I had no edges!!!!'); our W08 plate; and the single longest-running hair video found is Lumin at 101 days - 'Stop doing this if you have CCCA' - plus Black Hair Growth Remedy's two sung confessions at 60d and 55d. Textured-hair and CCCA is the deepest seam in the whole video set.
Plate: Adapt W08d
Frame it as the cost of styling, never as her fault.
T10 · The casting call
LOOKING FOR 30 WOMEN WHO'LL PHOTOGRAPH THEIR PART FOR 90 DAYS.
No serums. No pills. One oil, and we send it.
Pain: Wanting to stop hiding the part, and not trusting another serum enough to pay for it.
Awareness: Problem aware - and it asks for almost nothing
Shoot: Handwritten on a torn notebook page, photographed flat on a kitchen table with the bottle beside it. Deliberately zero production value.
Device: Casting call / recruitment - the most distinctive TOF device in the whole data set, and the only one that is not selling inside the ad
Evidence: Root & Bloom, 45 days live: 'WE'RE LOOKING FOR 20 WOMEN OVER 50 READY TO STOP HIDING THEIR PART WITHOUT SERUMS OR PILLS'
Plate: NEW - a photographed note, not a generated scene
BLOCKER: this only runs if the programme is real - real recruitment, real free product, real consent to be photographed. A fake casting call is a fabricated record. Needs your sign-off on the mechanics before it is built.
T11 · The shot
THE WEIGHT WENT. SO DID YOUR HAIR.
Shedding after fast weight loss is common. Batana oil may help with shedding.
Pain: Her hair started coming out a few months into a GLP-1, and nobody connected the two for her.
Awareness: Unaware to problem aware - a trigger event does the work
Shoot: A bathroom counter, a pen-style injector beside a hairbrush with hair in it. No face needed. Cold morning light.
Device: Trigger-event entry - the newest live cultural cause in the category
Evidence: FIVE video ads in the census key their hook to this. Prime Hair Care 41d, verbatim: 'If you're on Ozempic or WegaV and your hair is falling out, you need to hear this.' Nobody in batana touches it.
Plate: NEW
Name the association, never a mechanism or a cure. Do not name a drug brand in the artwork, do not imply we treat a medication side effect, and do not suggest she stop or change a prescription.
T12 · Before the wig
BEFORE YOU BUY ANOTHER WIG.
One oil, one ingredient. Batana oil may help with shedding.
Pain: She has decided to cover it permanently rather than keep trying.
Awareness: Problem aware, late - she is about to stop trying
Shoot: A wig or a stack of headscarves on a bedroom chair, her hand resting on them, face out of frame. Quiet, not tragic.
Device: Resignation interrupt - catches her at the moment of giving up, which no offer ad can reach
Evidence: Black Hair Growth Remedy 62d, verbatim: 'Before you give up on your hair and settle for wigs and scarves, watch this.'
Plate: NEW
Never disparage wigs, scarves or the women who wear them. The hook is an interruption, not a judgement.
T13 · What's in the bottle
MOST OIL IS RUINED BEFORE IT'S BOTTLED.
Cold-pressed. One ingredient. Nothing else in it.
Pain: She has bought botanical oils before and suspects they were cut, cheap or processed to death.
Awareness: Solution aware - she is already shopping oils
Shoot: The open bottle on a plain surface with the raw batana nuts beside it, and the actual oil visible - the substance, not a sealed pack.
Device: Purity and extraction attack - the only hook here that defends a premium price
Evidence: Vexivo 59d, verbatim: 'Hexane extraction ruins castor oil.' Kurinuka's 99-day winner is the only batana ad that shows the real paste, and it is also the one that answers the price objection.
Plate: NEW - and nobody except Kurinuka shows the substance, so this is uncontested
Say what ours is, not what theirs contains. No named competitor, no unverified claim about another product's processing.
